TEA · DAY 11

What went into your tea?

Two sugar lines, one bottle

Two bottles can both say “brewed tea” on the front. To find out what went into them, turn them around. Start with the ingredients, then check the serving size. On the two US Pure Leaf labels we looked at, one serving is one 547 mL bottle, so the numbers can be compared directly.

The unsweetened version lists black tea and citric acid, with 0 g of total sugars per bottle. The sweet version lists sugar alongside the tea and citric acid. Its 42 g of total sugars includes 42 g of added sugars. That word “includes” matters: those two lines describe the same sugar here. They do not add up to 84 g.

Pour half the sweet bottle into a glass and that works out to about 21 g of sugar, based on this label. Next time you pick up a tea, check whether a serving means the whole bottle or just part of it. Sizes and recipes can vary, so use the label on the bottle in your hand.
